I spend the night stressing about the next day, so I don’t get much sleep. When I wake up in the morning, I feel like I was hit by a train. I glance at the clock and force myself up. I need to make Jacob and Lily breakfast.

Lily tells me I look like a zombie again, but I’m deprived of sleep instead of life. Heavy bags hang under my eyes as I begin to make the three of us breakfast, when Jacob tells me to go back to bed and that he’ll take care of Lily. I obey and drag myself back up the stairs, crashing on my bed in seconds.

The next time I wake up, I grunt at whoever’s shaking me awake. They are saying something, but I can’t hear them. A sleep-induced fog is blurring out my vision and hearing. Slowly they come back, and I open my eyes to see the clock reading two in the afternoon. I slept in until two. Two, wow! I never sleep in.

Shit!

I burst into a sitting position and see Jacob staring at me. I slept in until two! My brain finally re-engages, and I catch a few words from Jacob, “--to wake up. You must have been tired. When was the last time you had a full night’s sleep? Or at least half of it?”

“Never,” I smile, and he flashes one back. I’m squinting in the light through my windows. He must have opened the blinds. I groan and force myself out of bed. My legs nearly buckle as I take a step, but he catches me, despite the crutches. I glance up at him. “Thanks.”

I continue to the bathroom where I fill the sink with cold water. Ugh. This is going to suck for five seconds. I dunk my head in the sink and hold it there for a moment. Icy water shoots up my neck, sending a jolt through my body.

“Damn!” I shout, yanking it out quickly with a start. I dry my face and drain the sink, walking back over to Jacob. “Okay, sorry. I’m here. Thanks for waking me up.”

“Sure. That’s a harsh way to wake yourself, though.”

“It works,” I snort, wiping the sleep from my eyes. “Sorry. I shouldn’t have slept in.”

“You needed the rest.”

True, I did. I really, really needed the rest.

“Alright, I’ll be down in a second,” I tell him, then shoo him out the door. I swear I’m blushing while I push him out of my room.

“Report to training in ten,” he laughs. I smile then close the door in his face.

I’m downstairs in three minutes, changed and looking as if I’ve been awake for hours. A sandwich sits on a plate in front of me with apple slices arranged on the side.

“Made you lunch.”

Suddenly I realize how hungry I am and devour it. “Thank you,” I continue inhaling the food. “Dang, this is good.” It’s far more flavorful than my plain everyday sandwiches.

“Finish up, and let’s get started as soon as possible.” I glance around the room to make sure there is no one home to hear his words.
